Description

The tradition of Rangoli attains different vernacular names in different parts of the country. In Andhra and Telangana, it goes by the name ‘muggu’, meaning patterns created on the floor using rice flour, coloured sand or flower petals.

In this Kondapalli masterpiece, the artisan coaxes us to revel into the beauty of this traditional Indian ritual and that of the maiden who draws it. ‘Muggu’ adorns the front yard of the house after being treated with a coat of cow dung to obtain antiseptic properties.

A gesture to bring good luck to the house, ‘Muggu’ is one of the most beloved and familiar concepts originating in India. In rural India, women start the day by watering the entrance to their homes and adding a lustrous touch of fortune with a rice flour Muggu.

Rangoli Muggu designs often impersonate geometric shapes with graceful depictions of flowers or deities. With their exquisite wooden handicrafts, the Kondapalli artisans always present the most exceptional rituals of rural India to the fore front and share the joys of a simplistic life, full of meaning and peace.
